SETTING

Importance of ambiance

Anywhere could be an ideal setting for romances to take place for example bakeries, oceanside, resorts, offices, hospitals, etc. But that doesn't mean the world within the love story doesn't play an important role. The location should be added more like color, lighting, etc. to show the information of the characters like where they live, and to highlight their interactions when they first met, hung out, spent the night together, etc. then fell in love. These elements included in the ambiance could create a spark for the movie.

How Ambiance Affects Mood

The ambiance is an atmosphere belonging to a place that affects the feelings of characters and leads to how the audience feels about the context. The atmosphere could change due to the moment of the day, what happens at that place, and the energy from the inhabitants.

For instance, to create an atmosphere where the characters are supposed to fall for each other, they could have a late night shift together where no one is around which traps them in a quiet spot and dim lights. Even when they both stay in a public place like an office, it is still possible to turn it into a personal place with just two of them by adding more effects to the atmosphere. Furthermore, the dim light creates a cozy atmosphere which makes the chemistry between the two characters more natural.

Creating a perfect ambiance

First of all, the emotions needed to be considered, and then concentrate on the details used to express feelings. To emphasize the emotions, we could elide some of the details from the surrounding environment such as typing sounds in the office, a crying baby in the crowd, a kid listening to “Baby Shark" without headphones, or the incessant rocking of a car, … These should be avoided if unnecessary as it could make the characters feel uncomfortable from the circumstances which unable to connect the characters' emotions with the settings. Therefore, we just need to include the most evocative details in the storyline.

Let's make an example of a love scene on a train,

“The warmth of the sun kept me awake as the faint glow of sunset rays shone through the window and right into my eyes. In front of me, Jane was sitting there looking at the vineyards. The train is gently swaying on the railways creating a mellow rumbling sound. I can feel the citrous scent of orange gumdrops passed on. Suddenly, Jane looked up into my eyes, her quick, sidelong glance slightly caused my heart to tremble. The kind of intimacy I have been trying to avoid has now turned obvious when we are facing each other. Everything gradually became blurry in my eyes, only me and her amidst the poetic scenery of the train.”

Conclusion

A romantic scene or narrative fits more with a stylistic set design rather than a realistic set design. A stylistic set design brings attention to itself in some manner for the audience to figure out the romantic features that engage of stronger emotions.
